NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, did not confirm his residency plans promptly following his triumph in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will forever remain a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

But his opponents, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.

Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
