A extensive rescue and recovery operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean region for two missing sailing vessels carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Naval Rescue Efforts Initiated

Mexico has deployed naval assets and search planes to search for the two vessels, which were had on board at least 9 sailors, per a official statement.

The ships had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.

Context of Aid to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation grapples with repeated national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and both vessels are outfitted with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," an official involved in the effort stated.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is working closely with the officials and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Previous Relief Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried a significant amount of relief supplies to the country.

That ship, dubbed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Wider Geopolitical Backdrop

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 surgical procedures postponed in Cuba because of energy rationing.

Diplomatic measures have been ramped up lately, with remarks from several leaders highlighting the complicated nature of relations.

In response to previous proposals, a high-ranking official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their present status remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy said it was committed to using every available asset at its command to find the vessels and ensure the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
