Tropical Storm the storm Intensifies While Barrels Toward Jamaica

Cyclone Melissa is forecast to escalate to a uncommon category five cyclone as it veers towards the Caribbean island, delivering life-threatening sudden floods and rock falls.

This weather system, which recorded winds of up to 120 mph as of 06:00 GMT, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean region and is projected to hit the coast by early next week, according to hurricane specialists.

Warnings of power cuts and structural damage have been issued as Melissa generates up to thirty inches of precipitation and storm surges as high as 4m above ground. "Find safe refuge immediately," residents have been urged.

Melissa is the thirteenth cyclone in this year's Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in November.

Most Intense Cyclone Risk

A highest-level hurricane is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

Although Melissa is set to reduce in intensity to a category four hurricane before reaching the island, meteorologists said there was "very little practical difference in the overall impacts" upon making contact with land, and that the cyclone will be "at least that intensity" when it strikes the country.

Critical Readiness Measures

With storm-force gusts and precipitation already expected ahead of it moves across the island's interior - perhaps encompassing the national capital - alerts state that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"Several days of harmful winds and torrential rain have begun and will cause severe and deadly sudden floods and multiple mudslides," advised climate experts.

The country's head of government the statesman stated: "I understand that there are many Jamaicans who are anxious, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: concern is justified.

"But the optimal approach to manage anxiety and any unease and anxiety is to remain prepared."

Locals are being advised to secure their homes with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to gather basic necessities.

Regional Impact

Alerts are also in effect for areas in Haiti such as the primary urban center, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is expected to bring comparable impacts by the middle of next week.

Mudslides currently triggered by the cyclone have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to emergency services.

Projected Trajectory

The hurricane is projected to cross the island nation by Wednesday before passing across the Antillas Mayores and entering the open ocean.

By the moment it makes contact with the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have weakened to a Category 3 cyclone.
