The Showrunner Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... Currently.

The creative mastermind never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
