Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
