The gravest potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by scientists, ranging from a scorching 4C jump in mean temperatures to a two-metre surge in ocean levels. A separate possibility predicts a drop of 6C in temperature following the failure of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and energy needs.

These impacts, a number of which are associated with climate tipping points, are considered as improbable but plausible. The scientists explained that these models filled a gap in planning that had left the UK not ready for catastrophic possibilities.

"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are plausible," stated the professor who directed the study. "The UK has been planning in the absence of the methods to plan for extreme possibilities. We've now provided planners what they need to get ready for future conditions they pray never occur, but must not overlook."

A Suite of Severe Conditions Projections

A further series of dire projections sets out the projected severity of severe conditions between now and the end of the century. These suggest that thermometer readings could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C above the norm, while precipitation could be three times standard measurements.

The probability of the catastrophic events coming to pass remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what steps will be implemented to combat global warming and how the Earth's systems will behave. The research developed the extreme models using a mix of real-world events, climate models and climate physics. The scenarios omit international cascading effects such as the agricultural collapse and increased conflict.

The project was initiated as part of a official climate resilience programme. Earlier reports have stated that too little consideration was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

An independent advisory body has recommended that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and evaluate the threats for severe warming. Previous adaptation plans have been described as being "very weak" by environmental groups.
