New York Launches Online Platform for Public to Submit Immigration Videos Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens

New York state AG has rolled out a fresh digital platform asking locals to submit photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement around New York. This step comes just a shortly after a major enforcement action rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering mass protests.

American Citizens Arrested In ICE Operation

A lawmaker revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four citizens were arrested and detained for "almost a full day" following Tuesday's raid. Rallies broke out in the city on consecutive evenings.

"All New York residents has the right to exist without intimidation," the AG wrote in a release.

"For those who saw and documented federal operations during the raid, I urge you to provide that material with my office. We are dedicated to examining these submissions and evaluating any wrongdoings."

Submission Process

The platform includes spaces to submit images and video footage of the incident, along with a field to note where it occurred. Before submitting, individuals must check a option that confirms that "authorities may use any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, such as in a court case or public report."

Information about the Manhattan Operation

The enforcement action, which witnesses say featured over fifty government officers, took place in a famous area of the city where fake products and merchandise are commonly traded in large quantities – frequently to sightseers.

Footage of Tuesday's raid show several masked and armed personnel securing and holding a man, and forcing aside witnesses. Throngs of New Yorkers pursued the agents through the streets. An armored military vehicle was observed traveling down the Manhattan avenues.

Leadership Statements

At a midweek briefing organized with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be arrested for no reason." He clarified the citizens were released on Wednesday with no legal action taken.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman said. "This is a armed campaign to incite tension. It is simply a pretext to generate turmoil for federal officials to utilize the troops to stop unrest that they initiated."

Widespread Condemnation

Outrage over the immigration operation escalated – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Once again, the federal government selects authoritarian theatrics that generate terror, instead of protection. It must stop," one mayoral candidate wrote.

New York City advocacy organizations spoke out also.

"ICE raided the neighborhood with armored transports, masked agents and protective equipment to go after small merchants trying to make a living. This action had nothing to do with community security and focused completely on intimidating residents and areas," stated the head of a major immigrant coalition.

Agency Rules

Agency rules prohibits the detention of US citizens and the bureau has claimed it refrains from take into custody citizens. Yet, independent reporting has revealed that numerous citizens have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities since the beginning of the existing leadership.

Recent Pattern

Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in the state and nationwide this year.

An October operation in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Protests opposing immigration enforcement are ubiquitous as are accusations of aggression and inhumane treatment.

Recently, a submission submitted by civil rights groups stated medical neglect of expectant mothers in detention centers.
