New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
