Maddie McCann brother and sister, Amelie and Sean, have testified in court that their encounters with an accused stalker were deeply disturbing and unsettling. They explained feeling stressed and scared by a woman who insisted she was their missing sister.
Appearing remotely, she stated how the accused, Julia Wandelt, reached out to her repeatedly through social media and written correspondence. Amelie explained the relentlessness was very frightening since you don’t know what she’ll do next.
Communications from the defendant were presented in court, in which she recounted recollections of living in the McCann household that she said were recovered under hypnosis. She told the court, It's very upsetting that she's inventing these alleged recollections, despite the fact she’s not Maddie.
The court learned that Wandelt had created images of herself and Amelie as children, which the prosecution said were made with ChatGPT. A number of these images were sent through online channels, while additional ones were printed and enclosed in a mail to Amelie.
Amelie said, I didn’t like it, it caused me to feel very uncomfortable. It was evident she edited the pictures to make me appear similar to her, which was quite distressing. I knew I didn't resemble that, I knew it had been manipulated.
She also spoke about the effect of the supposed stalking on her mother, Kate, who gave evidence about being confronted at home by the defendant and her co-defendant, Karen Spragg.
I think my mum found it the most difficult. My mother was targeted by the defendant more than the others in the family and I think it certainly had a negative effect on her and her mental health, Amelie said. It's distressing when someone’s pleading with you to believe them and playing with your emotions, to the extent you are questioning yourself.
In a testimony presented to the trial, her brother said that for him, he had not been severely impacted by Wandelt's alleged stalking. But he had been distressed that she was attracting online attention, with people saying hurtful and unjust things about his parents.
If she was not suffering from a psychological condition and was completely conscious she is not Madeleine, yet continues to assert she is, that will be very distressing for me, he said. I do not believe she is my sibling. The reality that the defendant is engaging in this behavior has resulted in a great deal of stress and I find it profoundly troubling.
The defendant and her co-defendant have pleaded not guilty to harassing the McCann family. The trial are ongoing.
