Jailhouse Shock: The Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He battled the law and the legal system triumphed.

Sixty days following receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “annihilate” the nation's political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally seems headed to prison.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The found-guilty coup-monger – who has been subject to residential detention in his mansion while a set of court processes and challenges proceed – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the next few days, amidst growing rumors that he will be transferred to a infamous maximum security penitentiary.

Historical Remarks on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the far-right former paratrooper showed scant compassion for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we provide those dirtbags a good life?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “Unless you desire to finish in prison, the only thing required is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Destination Debate

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, four of whom this week toured the prison in an apparent attempt to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he predicted the elderly figure to be jailed in the following week and a half and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal ailments – the result of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is highly critical. He cannot to manage if they move him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells containing forty inmates: “It's almost one square meter per detainee.

“We talked to the inmates and they protest, of course, of the awful cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

He is not the only voice speaking out ahead of the one-time head of state's expected incarceration.

Authoring in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and claimed Brazil was about to see “the greatest unfairness in its past”.

“It represents an unfairness that gnaws the souls of millions Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.

Varied General Opinion

It is possibly accurate given the considerable following Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. Yet his anticipated imprisonment has also warmed the spirits of many other people who think he should be incarcerated for plotting to block the incoming president from assuming office – and even conspiring to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the current administration's political party, stated: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to obtain respectful handling – but respectful care in prison. He can’t carry on being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time celebrating the tough conditions of inmates, had suddenly woken up to their rights. “Only now has the far-right – which has repeatedly claimed that civil liberties were not for criminals – chosen to tour a jail to find out what circumstances are actually like,” he stated.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, degrading conduct”.

Possible Incarceration Conditions

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now houses about thousands of prisoners, his probable assigned facility appears to be a nearby penitentiary for officers and other “special” inmates called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are far more adequate than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the spectacular leader's home, around 12 miles away.

As per information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – roughly the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 square meter bathroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre terrace. “He could be permitted to have a set and also a cooler in his room as long as they were supplied by his family,” information stated.

Political Reactions

Senator Lucas denounced the rumoured idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a form of retaliation” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his future in the {
