Italian Court Great Nicola Pietrangeli Has Died at 92

The world of tennis mourns a true icon: Nicola Pietrangeli, a double French Open champion, left us at the age of 92.

Pietrangeli etched his name by emerging as the pioneering Italian to secure a Grand Slam singles title, achieving his first triumph at the French Open in 1959 and retaining the prestigious trophy the following year.

With an impressive 48 career titles, Pietrangeli was widely considered the nation's finest player until the emergence of current star and four-times major winner Jannik Sinner.

"The sport in Italy is grieving an legend. Nicola Pietrangeli, the sole Italian inducted in the World Tennis Hall of Fame, has died," announced the national federation.

In addition to his pair of French Open successes, Pietrangeli also was the finalist in Paris in both 1961 and 1964.

He set a remarkable 164 matches played for Italy in the prestigious team competition, securing victories in 120 of them, and spearheaded his country to its inaugural title in 1976.

Officials of the Italian Open, where he was a two-time winner, said: "We are profoundly saddened that we bid farewell to Nicola Pietrangeli, a veritable legend of Italian tennis..."
