We're in the sixth week in the football calendar and following recent talk regarding the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles as possible championship contenders, they both lost their perfect starts.
Striking during those contests were the number of infractions each conceded. The Eagles committed them in key moments meaning they kind of beat themselves after leading 17-3 entering the fourth period versus Denver, set to play in London this weekend.
However it proved good to observe how Denver's QB Bo Nix was able to have the shortfall before lead three scoring drives on three possessions during the final period, to win the victory 21-17.
Denver boast the defensive player of the year with cornerback their star corner. They are number one in red zone defence, whereas the Eagles lead the league in scoring near the end zone, and Denver won that battle.
They had effective strategies in terms of simulated pressure. They weren't always rushing more than four defenders instead they might plug two LBs in the 'A' gap before withdrawing them and dispatch a nickel from the outside.
At the start in the campaign, we said during a show that Denver could be this season's dark horses. They finished last season well and did a good job of building upon that.
Could Denver be this year's underdog story?
New TE their tight end has stepped up significantly and recent running back JK Dobbins is a guy they believe in. He now ranks 5th league-wide in ground gains (402) and tied for fourth for rushing touchdowns (4).
I love how head coach the Broncos' leader has "RUN IT!" prominently on his call sheet.
That shows how Denver are a team aiming to run first, because you can do a lot based on that approach. It reduces down the pass rush and maintains in positive down and distances.
This has helped quarterback Bo Nix, who came the NFL as the 12th overall draft pick last year, passing for 29 touchdown passes – second only to a star QB in rookie records (31 in 2020).
Josh Allen and Herbert have the arm strength to pass all over, however they lack the mobility that Nix has. He has exceptional arm talent, which is different, plus he's highly agile.
His assets include his mobility, being able to pass on the run, as well as finding different arm angles to make the pass when he rolls out of the pocket, on rollouts. He is able to deliver that layered pass across the middle and past defenders.
For a young quarterback, at 25, he's got a lot of poise under pressure and is not really fazed by extra rushers. He tries to avoid a sack whenever possible and can throw in tight spots. He possesses sharp intelligence and remains quick to decide.
If you constantly run the ball it consumes the clock and forces the defence to stay in play extended periods, and when you've got a mobile QB the defence has to cover the area vertically and horizontally. It can be exhausting.
Nix has pushed back at Payton during games at times and I think Payton likes that attitude, seeing him as such a competitor. In my view it's fun for him to coach a rookie QB who's similar to play-dough. The coach can truly develop him the way he desires to build it. I think it's a special experience for him.
The head coach has won a championship and has surpassed Bill Parcells in all-time victories (173 - tied 14th overall). He's seen everything. I think the achievements Denver are having offensively is largely down to his leadership, his play-calling, his situational awareness – and the combination with Nix aids shape him into who he is.
There's no better a more qualified person guiding you, to assist you through difficult moments and boost confidence.
I believe in the Broncos' defense, in Bo Nix's tenacity and composure. But is the team good enough to go against an elite team at full strength? Since that wasn't a Super Bowl performance from Philadelphia last Sunday.
Currently, it's unlikely the Broncos are incredible. They're working better than most, which is a good place to be in their division. The key is is maintain this path.
They're really good at embracing their forte, which is the ground game, and this is exactly what they should do against the Jets at Tottenham. It's going to be the JK Dobbins show, essentially.
New York have allowed 140 rushing yards each contest (sixth worst), five ground scores so far (10th worst), and they are the sole squad yet to win any game.
Since the NFL started recording takeaways in 1933, this team are the inaugural squad to go without a single takeaway through five games, which is surprising considering that their new coach Aaron Glenn a defensive coach with another team.
Patrick Mahomes says Kansas City have 'already lost too many games' after Monday's defeat to Jacksonville.
Following this Sunday's game, the Broncos have a manageable slate up to their bye (in week 12) - the New York Giants, the Cowboys, Houston Texans plus the Raiders before the Kansas City Chiefs.
Looking at the AFC West, Kansas City are 2-3 and the Broncos are tied with the Los Angeles Chargers at 3-2 so they could make a run at leading the division.
This hinges upon what version Kansas City shows up they face since the Broncos {beat|def
