Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials voiced fury after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and punished "with execution" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Content That Provoked the Debate

The clip, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in defense or intelligence positions.

"As we did, you all swore an vow to safeguard and defend this national charter," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline improper directives, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out directives that contravene the law or our national charter."

Donald Trump's Furious Reaction

The recorded statement reportedly prompt a heated response from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump posted on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he wrote: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our Nation. Their comments cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials React

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership issued a unified announcement condemning the remarks.

"Political violence has no position in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our country with tremendous national pride and distinction. We clearly censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."

The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme online messages and recant his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement added.

Lawmakers' Firm Reaction

The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a declaration.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who value this nation and made an pledge to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important duty."

"What's most telling is that the president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they execute their pledge to the constitution and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They added: "Every American must unite and denounce the former president's calls for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a time for moral clarity."

More Governmental Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's comments and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the execution of public representatives."

He continued: "This represents an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and absolutely."

The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress instructing soldiers to defy commands, I think that is historic in American history."

The Republican leader also allegedly told journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and establish all that."

Administration Statement

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official stated. "You have active officials of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the president's lawful orders."

She added: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially promoting."
