Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
