Active Aero & Overtake Mode - Understanding F1's Fresh Technical Jargon

Formula 1 has unveiled the simplified vocabulary that will be used to describe the advanced features of its upcoming 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is introducing what is potentially the most significant technical shift in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a substantially higher electrical capacity, necessitating major innovations in the aero packages.

Over a race distance, competitors will tactically deploy electrical energy – potentially on qualifying laps – to extract the optimal result.

Extensive fan consultation were conducted with a wide range of fans, including long-time followers and newcomers, to understand which terminology would make things clearer of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The stated goal was to render a set of intricate features of the racing as accessible as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, older technical labels for some systems – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the adjustable aero – have been abandoned in favor of intuitive labels that succinctly convey the actual function of the innovation.

What's the New Technology?

The FIA states that racers will have more power to determine tactics regarding battery management, harvesting, and efficiency.

The 2026 rules introduce a set of functions that will be visually displayed on TV overlays to aid the audience's understanding of the race battle.

• Passing Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a surge of additional ERS power accessible when a car is within one second the leading car to assist with an overtake.
• Power Mode: This is a manual power boost from the energy recovery system that can be deployed for overtaking or defending. It grants the pilot peak output at the push of a button.

Both of these key functions will have to be deployed strategically, as the total energy is strictly limited.

• Active Aero: Both the front and rear wings change configuration – opening on the long straight sections for reduced drag and increased velocity, and angling down in the corners for peak grip.
• Energy Harvesting: Cars can replenish their battery with regenerative braking, or during partial power application at the straight's end or in corners where only partial power is required.

2026 Car Specifications

The vehicles for the new era will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a car length reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight reduced by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will inevitably claw this back as they refine their designs.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will utilize adjustable aero systems – both wings will adjust on the straight sections to cut resistance and enhance velocity and click back into place for maximum cornering performance.

Wheels will continue to use 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be narrower, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The 2026 engines will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the petrol engine and the battery and motor, a rise from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.

The hybrid system is streamlined through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the intricate and expensive device that recovered energy from the exhaust turbo.

All vehicles will be mandated to operate on 100% sustainable fuel, produced using organic sources or synthetic production methods.
